DETAILS
In Appalachia, faith communities have long been central to social, cultural, and economic life—serving as gathering spaces, sources of resilience, and agents of change. Today, as the region navigates economic transitions, demographic shifts, and evolving community needs, new and reimagined third spaces—places where people come together outside of home and work—are emerging alongside traditional faith-based institutions. How can philanthropy support these spaces as sites of bridging, healing, and transformation? This pre-convening will explore the intersections of faith, philanthropy, and third spaces, examining how these elements collectively foster belonging, support just transitions, and uphold community traditions while embracing necessary change. Through storytelling, interactive dialogue, and regional case studies, participants will engage in critical conversations about the evolving role of faith communities and third spaces in strengthening Appalachian communities. Attendees will leave with deeper insights into the ways philanthropy can invest in both legacy institutions and new gathering spaces to sustain social connection, cultural identity, and community-led solutions in a time of transformation.
